The Rachene canyon
The Rachene canyon: along the river between Kameno Pole and Reselets.
The Rachene river connects Reselets with a wider karst landscape that continues up the valley towards Kameno Pole. Along its course the river has cut a deep limestone canyon of steep slopes, rock formations and narrow sections.
The valley
A canyon hidden between the plateaus.
From a distance the canyon is not visible in the flat field around it. From its rim, though, a drop of about 90 metres opens up, with a small river running along the bottom and slopes that are heavily karstified and covered in vegetation. The University of Mining and Geology describes the remaining stretch of the valley towards Reselets as an impressive landscape reaching a depth of up to 100 metres in places.
The rock formations
Chuklite and Kamarata along the Rachene.
Chuklite are groups of rock pyramids formed in the Upper Cretaceous limestones along the canyon. Kamarata is a block erosion form that the river broke through, cutting a narrow gorge. According to the University of Mining and Geology both have been protected since 1974; the current brochure of the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water in Pleven lists Kamarata, in the land of Breste, as a natural monument declared in 1974. Work on the Register and cadastre of geological phenomena established that the protection order fixed their location wrongly in the land of Kameno Pole: the actual Chuklite and Kamarata lie about two kilometres east along the Rachene, in the land of the neighbouring village of Breste. These are separate geological phenomena and not part of Kaleto.
The river
The same river reaches Reselets.
The Rachene is not a separate attraction unconnected to Reselets. It is the same river that passes through the village, and the valley upstream opens up the larger natural context that Reselets is part of.
Location
Not immediately by the reservoir.
The most characteristic stretches of the canyon and the rock phenomena Chuklite and Kamarata lie up the Rachene valley in the direction of Kameno Pole. They are not immediately by the Reselets reservoir. The lower part of the valley reaches the Reselets area, where the Kaleto forest park holds other protected objects: Skalnite Kukli and Kaleto.
