Kuklite in Uleya
Kuklite in Uleya: Reseletskite Kukli on the right bank of the Iskar.
The geotope the university calls Reseletskite Kukli lies in the Uleya locality southeast of the village, above the Iskar, not at the reservoir. This page carries the official and academic identity of the place; access to it has not been verified.
Geotope
More than 20 rock pinnacles along the rim.
The University of Mining and Geology describes more than 20 rock pinnacles along the rim of a rock face about 200 metres above the level of the Iskar, at about 330 metres above sea level, on the steep right bank of the river southeast of Reselets. The rim is visible from the Sofia - Varna railway line that passes below it. The geotope is included in the Register and Cadastre of Geological Phenomena in Bulgaria.
Status
A protected natural monument since 1972.
The order of 1972 declared the rock formation Kuklite in the Uleya locality, in the land of Reselets, a natural monument. The boundary of the protected territory was updated in 2019 by Order RD-292 of 18 April 2019.
The limestone
Forms in Maastrichtian limestone.
The pinnacles developed in Maastrichtian limestone of the Mezdra and Kaylaka formations, the same Late Cretaceous layers that build the other limestone places around Reselets. How water and fractures shape such pinnacles is told on the landscape page.
The name
Reseletskite Kukli: one name, several places.
The university calls this geotope Reseletskite Kukli. Tourism material from various years has used the same name more broadly, including for the route through Pladnishteto to Barazha and sometimes for Kupenite. The site therefore gives every page the official locality name, and the explanation of the confusion is gathered on the overview page of the Kukli.
Distinction
Not Skalnite Kukli, Kupenite or Kaleto.
Skalnite Kukli in the Pladnishteto locality are a separate protected territory in the Rachene valley, Kupenite are a separate geotope by the road to Breste, and Kaleto is the canyon with the collapsed blocks. The four places belong to an unusually dense group of geological phenomena around the village and should not be confused.
Access
Access has not been verified.
The site has not checked on the ground how Uleya is reached and publishes no route, parking or directions. The university’s point is a reference for the place, not the start of a trail. Photography will follow once the place is photographed from a verified viewpoint.
